Life is Good on Sunset Farm
Access to healthy food is another key ingredient to living the good life in our community — food that is grown on our very own award-winning Sunset Farm.
Agmenity, a Houston-based company known for its garden and farm designs, planned our community farm which was recently named “Community Amenity Center of the Year – Developer” by the Greater Houston Builders Association. Spanning 1.5 acres, the farm produces vegetables, fruits and herbs. Broccoli, cauliflower, kale, squash, okra, tomatoes, melons, potatoes, carrots, lettuce, spinach, onions, beets and dill are just some of the items residents have been able to purchase. Homegrown food is one reason community gardens are great. Here are a few more:
Improved Dietary Habits
Studies show that people living near a community garden are 3.5 times more likely to eat fruits and vegetables at least five times a day. Part of the reason is that the produce is fresher and of better quality than what is found in most supermarkets. Our residents can purchase the food grown on the farm at our weekly farm stand, 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. (The public is also invited to browse the fruits of our labor.)
Encourages Exercise
Gardening is hard work. Our Farm Educators need help, and our residents provide it. Having a community farm also encourages residents to plant their own backyard gardens. Either way, they get more exercise which leads to better health.
Relieve Stress
Spending time outdoors has been shown to reduce stress. Gardening forces people to slow down, focus on the present and leave their to-do lists behind.
Improve the Environment
Community gardens help make the environment healthier. That’s because plants take in carbon dioxide and replace it with oxygen. Healthier air means healthier residents. Our garden is grown using organic methods. That means we don’t use chemicals that damage the environment and your health.
Build Community
Whether it’s helping our Farm Educators or just coming out to see what’s new at the farm stand, our farm helps our residents connect with one another. We also host farm dinners, special markets and educational classes. All places where our residents can meet up and make friends.
